There is a very real enemy of your Christian marriage. Every day, several times each day, that enemy seeks to destroy the marriage covenant you entered into. In a world that so quickly gives up trying to save a marriage, you need an effective strategy to beat the odds and have a successful marriage. Today I will show you how to create a covenant prayer for marriage protection.
Why You Must Create a Covenant Prayer for Marriage Protection
What does covenant mean in marriage?
To understand that, you need to know that a covenant is an agreement or a contract. A Biblical covenant is an agreement that is made heart deep between the human party and God.
What does the Bible say about the marriage covenant?
The Bible compares the marriage relationship to the relationship between the Church and God. That’s a big commitment.
When you marry, God commands:
- The two to become one flesh (Matthew 19:6)
- Faithfulness to your spouse (Malachi 2:14)
- Love and respect to your spouse (Ephesians 5:22-33)
- Hold the marriage in honor (Hebrews 13:4)
So what does the covenant of marriage mean?
God sees the marriage covenant as a binding agreement between one man and one woman to spend an entire lifetime honoring one another and Him.
Even human law sees a covenant marriage as something different than the standard marriage vows. In 1997, three states in the USA adopted covenant marriage. The differences are that couples agree to pre-marital counseling and accept more limited grounds for later seeking a divorce (1).
Since The Covenant Marriage is more holy than a contract marriage, you must create a covenant prayer for marriage protection.

How Do You Pray for Your Marriage?
Praying for marriage is a vital role for every wife. If you are not praying for your marriage you are not even engaging in the real battle for your marriage!
Most of us would say we pray for our marriage and the prayers go something like this:
God, help me.
Lord, save my marriage.
Father, change him.
Those are prayers, but can I be very honest with you? They are weak prayers. God tells us that prayer is powerful and effective. But what kind of prayers are the most powerful?
Scriptures to Pray for Marriage to Be More Powerful
This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
– 1 John 5:14-15, NASB
The Bible says, when you ask anything in His will, you have it. How do you know what is in God’s will?
Abide in Him and in His Word (John 15:7)
When you know God’s work, you know God’s will. Praying God’s Word, or praying scripture is a powerful way to pray for marriage!
So as you begin to create your covenant prayer for marriage, go to the Bible to find verses to make the prayer more powerful!
What Are the Essential Elements of Marriage as a Covenant?
Go to Google and search, “What are the characteristics of a godly marriage?” Then find a verse to go with each. I’ll share a few below.
- Faith
- Unity
- Love
- Respect
- Forgiveness
- Obedience
- Commitment
Prayers to Strengthen Marriage
After you know what to pray for, find Bible verses to turn into prayers to strengthen marriage.
l will find verses on faith and turn them into prayers to show you how to create a highly effective prayer for your marriage.
Prayer for Faith in Your Spouse
I need to break this into three parts to cover the majority of readers today, so if one doesn’t apply, read down to the next 😉.
Prayer for a lost spouse
Father God, You said that You sent Jesus to die on the cross that whosoever believes. My spouse is a ‘whosoever’ and I stand in faith today, claiming the power of Your word. Open his ears, soften his heart, bring him to a place of knowing he is a sinner and accepting that he needs You as his savior. Amen (John 15:7).
Prayer for a spiritually immature spouse
Lord, my husband is saved but doesn’t always act like he is saved. Help him to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only (James 1:22). Give him a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6). Teach him to read his Bible and pray, to seek You for wisdom and direction. Mature him so he can lead our family with grace and truth and honor You all his life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for increased faith in a spiritually mature spouse
Holy Spirit, I praise you that my husband is saved and walking faithfully with You. I pray you would bless him with even more faith and a deeper relationship with You. Help him to step out into faith, even when he doesn’t understand. Teach him to always trust your heart and walk in obedience which leads to blessings untold (Matthew 5:6).
Marriage Blessing Prayer
There are times we pray just a simple marriage blessing prayer like a prayer to:
- Bless your husbands’ job
- Improve intimacy in marriage
- Improve communication in marriage
- Deepen love and respect in marriage

There are times we pray just a simple marriage blessing prayer, but then there are times we need to go deeper. There are times when your marriage is under attack and you need to draw nearer to God over the hard parts.

Maybe you seek chocolate for comfort, Facebook for distraction, movies or shopping for entertainment. Plan to spend some time not doing those things. During that time, go to scripture to pray for marriage protection.
